Beads of all shapes, sizes, and colors transformed ordinary garments and accessories into fashion statements by meticulous hand sewing. Handbags, shoes, hats, gloves, and all manner of garments fell under the magic of nimble fingers and a creative mind.
“Beadwork is an excellent illustration of the limits of technology,” Karin Bohleke Ph.D., new director of the SU Fashion Archives and Museum, pointed out. “Beads can be made by machine out of a variety of natural and synthetic material, but the fact is they must be applied entirely by hand bringing human skill and artistry to the forefront.”
The exhibit uses garments and accessories from the permanent collection that span the 19th and 20th centuries.
Bohleke, who has an extensive background in historic costuming, began her duties as Fashion Archives and Museum director on June 4. “I love it here. The archives are truly one of Ship’s best kept secrets.”
The exhibit runs through December 7. Hours are Monday-Thursday noon to 4 pm. For more information or to schedule a group visit, call 477-1239.

The rich detail of the stunning embellishments are the highlight of the SU Fashion Archives fall show. New director, Karin Bohleke, has fun working to display each item to its best advantage.
