Happy Birthday! Alice Krewson ’28 and Kathryn Fogel ’22 celebrated birthdays earlier this year. Alice celebrated her 101st on April 23rd and Kathryn her 105th with the help of members of the Philadelphia Area Regional Council.
Alice, a life-long resident of Doylestown, is a retired teacher, a world traveler and volunteer. She gave up her hospital volunteer duties seven years ago at age 94. While at Shippensburg, Alice was only able to go home for Christmas vacation and spent the other holidays with classmates and their families. As a result she made some life-long friends including Martha Crone, Louise Zegar, Wilma Brubaker, Ruth Basehor, Dick Wolf, Fern Synder, Floranna Fox, Ester Basehor, and Elura Kocher. She visited and corresponded with them their entire lives and remains friends with their children.
Erza Lehman was president while Alice attended school here and she remembers her English and history teachers, Miss Blood and Mrs. Stewart. Living on the third floor of Old Main, Alice recalls in order to visit someone off campus you had to have a written invitation from your host.
Kathryn, who lives in Allentown, was a teacher for more than 40 years and also traveled extensively. She brought one of her Ship mementos, a 1922 Ship pennant to the celebration. Living in Old Main, she recalled how they had “parties” when someone received a care package from home. Using candles so no one would know they were up so late, Kathryn and her friends enjoyed cookies and other goodies. If a knock sounded, all the goodies quickly disappeared under the nearest bed.
Kathryn’s great niece, Susan Daniels, a Ship alum from the class of 1977, joined in the celebration. Susan is an attorney with the Virginia law firm, Westerman, Hattori, Daniels & Adrian.
Both women have fond memories of their time at Ship and are amazed at the changes they heard about.

Alice Krewson will get use from her Shippensburg University throw presented by Philadelphia Regional Council members (left to right) Pat Tornetta Keeney ’67, Jerome Dean ’82, Bob Keeney ’68 and Mike Pinkowicz ’76. Joining Alice is her nurse, Marty Helmich Starner ’82.

Kathryn Fogel enjoys the old and the new. She surprised Barbara Nicholson Berger ’90 (middle) with a pendent from her graduation year from the Cumberland Valley State Normal School. It is joined by a new university throw. Her great niece, Sue Novogratz Daniels ’77 was also on hand for the festivities.
