Recertification for LC

The College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) recertified the Learning Center through July 2010. Key to the mission of CRLA is its international tutor certification program that sets standards for minimum skills and training for successful tutoring. Certified programs may certify tutors at three levels: regular (10 hours training, 25 tutoring), advanced (20 hours training, 50 tutoring) and master (30 hours of training, 75 tutoring). This past semester seventeen SU tutors received certificates.

Philly kids visit

Members of the Philadelphia Alumni Regional Council were instrumental in having students from the A.B.Day Elementary School visit their alma mater. The students toured campus, ate in the dining hall, and participated in several activities. The visit gave them a first-hand look at what a college campus and students are like.

Mining minds

Creativity is a forté for Anna Carlen ’05 and Ryan Blackman ’06 as proven by their wins at the recent Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Boulder, Colorado this May.

“Our first place solution in Get the Message was based on a side of competition never seen by judges. We performed our skit as if it took place back stage as a competition was underway.” Ryan continued, “For our winner in Crazy Columns, we built a structure of balsa wood and performed a skit based on a ShippensBUrG circus. We used a lot of humor in our insect-based performance.”

Their greatest risk came in Laugh-a-thon where they took second place. Here teams had to perform a humorous skit portraying a puppet, a mime, and an image and its reflection. Most teams took the several months allowed to prepare their performance, but Anna and Ryan waited until just before the contest and went on with a virtually spontaneous act. They received a standing ovation from the crowd and kudos from the Odyssey founder for their idea. “We knew we’d either succeed or fall flat on our faces,” Ryan noted. “We had great success in all aspects of the problems, especially considering we competed with two individuals as opposed to a team of five or seven as is typical.”

The pair enjoyed representing Shippensburg while meeting other students who share their passion for creativity and critical thinking.

CPR to the rescue

Several rooms in Shippen Hall were turned into a clothing store for interns and student teachers looking for a more professional wardrobe to start their professional careers. Doors opened to reveal a plethora of items. Besides suits, jackets, sweaters, shirts and blouses, ties, shoes, portfolios, and briefcases were also offered. The Center for Professional Resources (CPR) is an on-going project the College of Education and Human Services does each semester. To learn more call 717-477-1487.
