Debate, Reds vs. Blues: The State of Moral Values in America, Oct. 18, place TBA, 7:30 pm, 477-1738. Peter Beinhart and Jonah Goldberg square off in this timely debate.

Proteus Lecture Series, Michael Ryan, Nov. 9, Old Main Chapel, 8 pm, 477-1132. Michael Ryan is a professor of English and creative writing at the University of California, Irvine. His recent memoir, Baby B was published in 2004 along with his New and Selected Poems, which won the 2005 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. Ryan’s lecture coincides with the publication of the fall issue of Proteus: A Journal of Ideas. A book signing will follow the lecture.


Performing arts

Chapel Series, Terry King, Cellist, Oct. 16, Old Main Chapel, 3 pm, 477-1638. King is involved with the critically acclaimed Cello America series that is recording major works for the cello. Anthony Lucia, violin, and Margaret Lucia, piano, will join King in this chamber music concert.

Nederlands Kamerkoor, Nov. 9, Memorial Auditorium, 8 pm, $10, 8, 5, 477-1747 or 477-1693. For almost 70 years, the Nederlands Kamerkoor (Netherlands Chamber Choir) has devoted itself to the performance of a cappella repertoire and has built a considerable reputation.

Chapel Series, Khac Chi Ensemble, Nov. 10, Old Main Chapel, 7 pm, 477-1638. The Khac Chi Ensemble is a combination of masterful musicians performing exquisite music on rare and unique instruments native to Vietnam.

Shippensburg Community Christmas Concert, Dec. 10, 11, Messiah United Methodist Church, 7:30 pm, 477-1638. Local vocalists and instrumentalists, members of the SU-Community Orchestra, and the Community Christmas Chorus, will perform a variety of music including selections from Handel’s Messiah, holiday classics, and audience sing-alongs.


The new H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center at Shippensburg University will open to the public for its first performance on January 19, 2006, featuring Wynton Marsalis.

Keeping with the Luhrs Center’s mission to educate, enlighten and entertain audiences of all ages with quality performances, the opening Spring 2006 season includes a little taste of everything.
