Building Your Professional Network

Whether you graduated two, twelve, or twenty years ago, knowing how to create a professional network should not be overlooked.

To begin creating your network consider the people you already know. Who do you know from your child’s soccer team? Who from college do you maintain contact? Create your list of people and begin to spread the word about your career goals.

Ask every person you know for referrals simply by asking, “Is there anyone else you know who it might be helpful for me to talk to?” By phrasing the question in this way people will feel more comfortable giving you referrals for gathering information rather than if you are asking for a job.

After you have shared your talents, skills, and career goals with everyone you already know, it is time to consider how you can meet people to add to your professional network. One very effective way is to join professional associations or trade groups that cater to people in your career field. These groups offer opportunities to interact with other professionals who have similar career goals. Group events are also a great place to meet potential employers giving them an opportunity to get to know you.

Another place to meet professionals and add to your network is through your local Chamber of Commerce events or by volunteering with an organization in your town. The people you meet may not have the same career goals as you, but they could prove a helpful connection. Never discount the potential of someone in your network.

Finally, remember networking is a two-way street. Be aware of how you can assist someone in your professional network and offer those services.

Networking is not a one-time interaction. To be successful in maintaining and developing your professional network you have to be willing to put the time and energy into building relationships with the people who make up your network.
