Day of Human Understanding, Alfred Lubrano, Sept. 25, 7 pm, Memorial Auditorium. Lubrano is a feature writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer and essayist for NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday since 1992. His talk, “Blue-collar roots, white-collar dreams,” is based on his book, Limbo: Blue-Collar Roots, White-Collar Dreams. He is also the author of Sons on Fathers. Book signing after the lecture.

President’s Lecture Series, Daniel Tammet, Oct. 25, 8 pm, $15. Daniel is a high-functioning autistic savant who calculates huge sums in his head instantly and immediately recognizes prime numbers but finds emotions difficult to understand. He sees numbers as complex shapes with color, texture, and motion: 37 is lumpy like porridge, 89 reminds him of falling snow. Daniel is rare in his ability to articulate his savant experience.

Festival 2007 Celebration Series

  • Concert I—Stuart Malina, Guest Conductor, July 12, Maestro Stuart Malina is one of America’s most versatile and accomplished conductors and is the music director and conductor of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra since June 2000.
  • Concert II—Stephen Gunzenhauser, Guest Conductor, July 19, Internationally recognized conductor, Grammy nominee and vibrant leader of one of Lancaster’s foremost cultural treasures, Maestro Stephen Gunzenhauser is equally at home as the revered music director of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra and as a citizen of the world.
  • Concert III—Festival Chamber Orchestra and Chorus, Blaine Shover, Conductor, July 26, Blaine Shover, professor of music, conducts SU’s Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers, is musical director for the Music Theatre, and serves as the artistic director and conductor of the Summer Music Festival.

Philippine Madrigals, Sept. 12, 8 pm, Luhrs Center, $25-$15. Beginning as a university-based chamber ensemble, the Philippine Madrigals have risen to international choral champions and cemented its stature as one of the world’s best choirs.

The Oak Ridge Boys, Sept. 26, 8 pm, Luhrs Center, $50-$20. The Oaks have had more than a dozen #1 singles including “Elvira, “American Made,” and “Gonna Take a lot of River” which have led to numerous awards and honors including Grammy, Dove, ACM, and CMA awards.

Hampton Rock String Quartet, Sept. 29, 7:30 pm, Luhrs Center, $15. According to Wireless Magazine, “One listen will change the way you hear both classical and pop music.” The Hampton Rock String Quartet brings classical music to the 21st century and classically interprets groups like The Who, Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin. They have been wowing audiences for more than 20 years.

Bruce Hornsby & Ricky Skaggs, Oct. 27, 8 pm, Luhrs Center, $58-$28. Grammy-award winners Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby team up for an evening of eclectic music featuring their new duet album. Hornsby’s piano and inimitable songwriting skills are added to Skaggs’ virtuosity and the sounds of mandolin, guitar, fiddle, and bass.


Performance Art

Gypsy, Oct. 3, 8 pm, Luhrs Center, $42-$22. This musical legend packs a wallop. Theater giants Arthur Laurents, Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim, and Jerome Robbins combined forces on this glitzy rise of two showbiz daughters and their stage mother Rose. “Let Me Entertain You” and Everything’s Coming Up Roses” are just two of well-known songs from this musical.

Kinsey Sicks, Oct. 11, 8 pm, Luhrs Center, $20-$15. For well over a decade, the Kinsey Sicks, America’s Favorite Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet, have brought award-winning a cappella singing, sharp satire, and over-the-top drag to audiences across the United States.
