The 10th annual Students Advocating LGBTA Equality (SALE) conference was held in late April. Workshops, guest speakers, movies, and an evening extravaganza featuring performances by the Harmonic Voices of Truth and the Heritage Dancers were part of the lineup.

Various topics were addressed concerning the education and acceptance of lifestyle diversity. Presenters from Keystone Health spoke on HIV/AIDS awareness and on the lesser-known sexual orientation, asexuality. The keynote speaker, Dan Miller, discussed the importance of the political process. Miller, a Harrisburg Councilman, was fired from an accounting firm in 1990 after admitting he was gay.

Active SALE member, Greg Wilson, said, “There’s great value in making contacts in our community as we work towards common goals. It was great hearing the different speakers and representatives from other schools and how they deal with the same issues.”

For fun, the Saturday night festivities ranged from a performance by singer/songwriter Mike Rickard in McFeely’s (CUB) to a “Movin’ on Up” dance in the Conestoga Room for those looking to unwind after the day’s sessions.

Workshop participants enjoy getting to know one another with an ice-breaking activity. The conference had a variety of events to choose from.
