Qualities and Skills Employers Want

Communication skills, initiative, analytical skills, and detail oriented are four of the top ten qualities and skills employers are looking for when they hire. According to the 2007 edition of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Job Outlook survey, the top ten personal qualities and skills employers seek are:

  • Communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Honesty/integrity
  • Interpersonal skills (relates well to others)
  • Motivation/initiative
  • Strong work ethic
  • Teamwork skills (works well with others)
  • Computer skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Flexibility/adaptability
  • Detail-oriented

According to NACE, employers have indicated for more than ten years that communication skills are something they look for in those they are hiring. However, these same employers indicate they have noticed these same skills are something many candidates lack.

To make the best impression, be sure you are highlighting in your cover letter and résumé your communication skills and the other nine skills and qualities employers look for. Be prepared for the interview with examples demonstrating your skills and personal qualities.

If you would like more information on how you can emphasize these skills and qualities on your résumé or in your cover letter, contact the University Relations office at 717-477-1218 or check out the Alumni Career and Employment Services information at www.ship.edu/alumni.
