Many of us reminisce but few take those memories a step further. One who does is David Potchak ’74. His website, Po’s Peek at the Past (www.pos-peek.com) is filled with tributes and tales of people, places, and things—including Ship. Entries are usually graced with a gentle sense of humor, most often directed at Dave. In less than three years, more than 1.25 million visitors have taken time to explore his pages.

Dave’s second site, EGGnoggin (eggnoggin.net), is an educational site that engages middle school students in EGGhead to EGGhead competition—all on-line. November’s contest covered Newton’s Laws, Prohibition, and botany.

Last year after 32 years, Dave retired from teaching for health reasons. Those reasons led to two open-heart surgeries within a month’s time. In quiet moments, he can hear his synthetic valves doing work his own once did. And while recuperating, Dave decided he wanted to give back.

“Still in my hospital room, and still very much on my back, I came up with the idea of “America’s New D-Day.” Picking a new charity each year, the plan is to funnel donations to the chosen charity on D-Day, June 6—the anniversary of the Normandy Invasion.

The first charity chosen is St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Tennessee. It’s a personal choice for Dave. He learned his valves were designed at St. Jude’s. To learn more visit America’s New D-Day (www.newD-Day.org).
