Shippensburg to Launch New Athletics Web- Site // There’s a new website in town. Check out the redesign of the sports web-site at www.shipraiders.com. The new site includes live stats, an on-line newsletter, RSS feeds, interactive fan polls, plus bios and photos of current student-athletes.

Wrestling // Seniors Pete Grodziak (left, center bottom) and Dan Nauman (top right, right bottom) totaled career highs in victories during their final season as Red Raider wrestlers. Grodziak ensured a victory over Millersville with a 12-9 decision at 197 pounds that propelled the Red Raiders to a 22-15 win. Nauman recorded a fall in 6:21 to highlight four victories on Senior Night inside Heiges Field House. He also had a career-high six match winning streak.

Kristy Trn Becomes Shippensburg’s Career Wins Leader // Kristy Trn ‘93-’94m became the winningest coach in Shippensburg women’s basketball history on January 6 when she picked up her 161st career victory in a 72-61 win over Millersville. Trn passed current Bellarmine head coach David Smith who totaled 160 wins in eight seasons with the Lady Raiders from 1990-98. Trn played three seasons under Smith before joining him as an assistant coach for four seasons.

Swimming // The Shippensburg swimming teams concluded regular season competition with a combined meet record of 6-6. Junior Noelle Knupp (above & top left) won two freestyle distance events at Bloomsburg, capturing both the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyles, to lead the Lady Raiders to its only PSAC meet victory. Senior Chris Ford (top right) made the most of his final swim by totaling three, top-three finishes: a victory in the 100-yard freestyle, second in the 50 free, and third in the 200 free relay.

Field Hockey // Nine members of the Lady Raider field hockey team were named to the 2008 ZAG/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Div. II National Academic Team. Juniors Carolyn Swift, Dani Haas, Jenna Blain, and Kim Davies plus seniors Megan Keener and Allison Shirley, sophomores Jamie Doughty and Laura Wylde, and freshman Kristen Brooks were selected.
Boys and Girls Club // The Boys and Girls Club received $800 from Professor Debra Cornelius’ Senior Seminar Class project. Joining her in presenting the check are President Bill Ruud and Assistant Basketball Coach Todd Johnson.
Indoor track, men // Senior Jamal James (left) broke the school record in the long jump with an NCAA provisional mark at the Bucknell Winter Classic with his leap of 23’ 9”. It was the best effort in the PSAC and the fifth-best mark in the nation. Freshman Leander Toney Jr. posted three first-place finishes in the high jump. His jump of 6’-10 1⁄4” is the 4th best mark in the nation by a freshman.
Cross Country honors // Junior Alli Rineer (left) and sophomore Mary Dell were named to the 2007 NCAA Division II U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women’s Cross Country All-Academic Team. As a team, Ship was selected as a 2007 NCAA Division II USTFCCCA Women’s Cross Country All-Academic Team.
Indoor track, women // The lady Raider track distance medley relay team shattered the all-time PSAC record by eight seconds on Feb. 9 en route to winning the event. The quartet of freshman Abby Huber (left), sophomore Shannon Hare, freshman Jamie McCollum, and sophomore Mary Dell became the first team in PSAC women’s history to break the 12-minute mark, finishing in 11:59.08.

At the Susquehanna Open, Huber established the new school record in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:15.28, while sophomore Mary Dell came within two one-hundredths of a second from winning the event herself. This is the second school record set by Dell this season that Huber has later broken. The same day Dell set the previous school record in the 800-meter dash, Huber shattered Dell’s mark in the 1,000-meter run by more than four seconds.

Basketball // The 11-3 start marked the Lady Raider Basketball teams best season start since the 2001-02. Ship faced some adversity in PSAC Western Division play. For the campaign, the Lady Raiders have held opponents to 41 percent shooting and have outscored opponents by an average of 3.1 points per game.

Senior guard Alex Jones (above right) became the 27th player in school history to score 1,000 career points on Jan. 16 against Lock Haven at home. His point came on a free throw in overtime. He also set the school record for three-pointers attempted in a season, surpassing the mark set three years ago.
