This past summer, Mark Spicka, assistant professor of history, attended the Fulbright German Studies Seminar. The seminar, “Germany in a Changing Europe: Transatlantic Ties, Transatlantic Challenges,” examined contemporary U.S./German relations including global terrorism. “You can get a sense of the massive, and often times bewildering, changes Germany went through in the 20th century by looking at Berlin,” Spicka said. “The Fulbright Commission puts together a wonderful program with very interesting, diverse, and important people coming to talk with us.” Also this summer, Spicka’s book, Selling the Economic Miracle: Economic Reconstruction and Politics in West Germany, 1949-1957 was published by Berghahn Books.

Assistant professor of geography/earth science Claire Jantz received two research grants totaling more than $1.6 million to investigate water resources. Her two-year project to investigate how urban pressures influence water resources on the Delmarva Peninsula is funded by a $230,000 grant from NOAA’s SeaGrant project office in Maryland. She and colleague assistant professor Scott Drzyzga were awarded $1.4 million by the National Science Foundation’s Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems competition to evaluate the effects of urban growth on water availability and limits to water supply in the Baltimore metropolitan region. The project is a collaboration between SU, University of Maryland at Baltimore County, Princeton University, and the U.S. Geological Survey. “I’m excited to be a part of both of these research projects. These studies will bridge the gap between science and policy, and provide tools and assessments that policy makers can use to make better land use decisions. I also look forward to working with undergraduate and graduate students who will be involved as research assistants on these projects.”
