Saying thanks
Not only is the building new, but the theater within the site has a new namethe John L. and Cora I. Grove Theater.
Thanks to the generosity of the Groves, the funds will be used to support the new Luhrs Performing Arts Center. The latest, a million dollar gift, was received from the estate this fall. Marty Walker, representing the Grove estate, said, “Cora’s $1.5 million pledge combines two of her favorite charitable interests, Shippensburg University and the performing arts.”
SU + MU = MSW
Shippensburg and Millersville Universities, in an historic joint arrangement, will begin offering a Master of Social Work in the fall of 2006. The program has already generated a great deal of interest from professionals across the state.
The program is either 36 or 60 credit-hours, depending upon whether or not the student has a bachelor’s in social work.
Designed using Council on Social Work Education accreditation guidelines, the program will serve the needs of rural and under-served populations in a seven-county region of south-central Pennsylvania. It will include a mix of campus-based instruction and distance education technology.
Students may take classes at the campus of their choice.

This year, the 2005 Advising Excellence Award goes to the Social Work Department for demonstrating the best practices in advising. The department shared its program during two workshops in the fall.
The award includes $5,000 for the department to use for advancement of undergraduate teaching and learning. It is given annually by the Provost’s Office after the Advisor Development and Resource Team reviews the applicants and determines the winning department.
Interim Provost Rick Ruth presents the 2005 Advising Excellence Award to Denise Anderson, associate professor and chair of the Department of Social Work.
New certificate offered
Professionals in the healthcare and human services fields have a new management certificate program to consider.
The certificate is based on five core managerial competencies including executive leadership, technology, financial risk, and marketing. Professionals must earn a minimum of 126 hours over a four-year period. Coursework is offered in traditional classroom formats as well as online.
