The 2005 Humanitarian Award

Award recipients, Beverly Butler and Yvonne Taylor ’76-’90m, are joined by Jody Harpster, interim president (left), and Ron Points ’69, alumni board president, and Wanda Peyton ’80, program chair.

Two long-time members of the Shippensburg University community were honored during Homecoming Weekend with the Alumni Humanitarian Award. The award recognizes alumni and staff who exemplify a commitment to the growth of human understanding. This year’s recipients were professor emeritus Beverly Butler and assistant professor Yvonne Taylor ’76-’90M.

Beverly joined Shippensburg University in 1983 as a member of the English department. In addition to her duties in the English department, she was the director of the Writing Center, now the Learning Center, for many years. She was a temporary director of the Act 101 Program, was president of the Shippensburg University Press, and worked closely with the publication of Proteus.

She played a major role in the development of the clustered learning program and provided insight to the Academic Advising Commission. She retired from the university in December 2002.

Yvonne, assistant professor of teacher education, returned to her alma mater in 1992 after teaching sixteen years at Scotland School for Veterans’ Children. She was the co-director of the university-sponsored Striving to Educate People Program (S.T.E.P.) for minority students in the Chambersburg area.

Dedicated to the positive growth of minority and majority students on campus and a contributor to the needs of the community and area school districts, Yvonne has been recognized in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, received the Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award for Community Service, and was honored for courage and vision in community service for the Chambersburg Area. She has also served on the board of directors for Building Our Pride in Chambersburg, part of the Chambersburg Community Improvement Association.

Congratulations to this year’s honorees.
